Our first Serbian pioneers came to the Ohio Valley
in the 1890's and early 1900's. In 1906 Holy Resurrection Serbian
Eastern Orthodox Church was established in Mingo Junction, Ohio.
When the Mingo Church was lost to mill expansion during WWII, the
Serbian community moved to Steubenville, Ohio, where it remains today on
North 4th Street.
Although many of the generations of post-war
parishioners moved to other areas where their jobs took them, most
remained here in the Ohio Valley. Many took the reins of
leadership from their grandparents before them. Hence, a vibrant
and proud community remained.
The idea for a gathering place for the Serbian
Orthodox people in the valley had been around for years. The
church community had its priorities in a definite order, church worship
and educational needs came first. When those were accomplished the
time would come to discuss a hall. In 1947 the new church was
built, the parish home addition in 1957, and finally the Church School
building in 1967.
After years of planning, fundraising, obstacles,
and the hard work of dedicated parishioners, the dream became a
reality. Property was found and plans drawn to not only design a hall,
but also to build a gymnasium and a banquet hall to fulfill the needs of
the surrounding communities. Groundbreaking was August 1, 1996.
The name, "Serbian-American Cultural
Center" was the product of careful consideration. First, the
name was to reflect the fact that the building had been built by and
belonged to Americans who were proud of and determined to perpetuate
their Serbian heritage and Orthodox faith. The name was also meant
to reflect the reason for the building: to be a multi-purpose
center dedicated to nurturing Serbian religious and cultural values and
traditions through a healthy social life, and to be a place where
present and future generations could gather and share with one another.
Although the Center hosted its first event on
March 1, 1997, the people of Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church ,
on May 4, 1997, dedicated their Serbian-American Cultural Center to
serve God, their faith, the Serbian community and their youth, and
all the people of the Upper Ohio Valley.
